ME - What it IS…

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME, sometimes referred to as ME/CFS) is an acquired and disabling, " serious, chronic, complex, and systemic disease associated with neurological, immunological, autonomic, and energy metabolism dysfunction ". It is classified as a neurological disorder by the World Health Organization (WHO) under ICD-11 Code: 8.E49 (previously ICD-10 G93.3).

  • Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) is a disabling, long-term condition
  • Estimated to be 2* as common as MS and 3* times more prevalent than HIV/AIDS,
  • Clear clinical symptoms which manifest predominantly based on neurological, immunological and endocrinological dysfunction
  • Multi-factorial pathogenesis with the hypothesis of initiation by a viral infection prominent.
  • Most frequently follows an acute prodromal infection, varying from upper respiratory infections, bronchitis or sinusitis, or gastroenteritis, or an acute “flu-like” illness.
  • Before acquiring ME most patients were healthy, leading full and active lifestyles.
  • Reaction to physical and mental activity and sensory input is unique to ME.
  • Over-exertion can make ME worse and the effects are often delayed and may not be seen within 24 hours.
  • Symptoms can range from mild to very severe and can include:
    • Cardiac and Cardiovascular Problems
    • Cognitive Dysfunction
    • Gastro-intestinal Problems
    • Headaches
    • Hormonal Imbalance
    • Immunological Problems
    • Muscle Weakness and Intense Pain
    • Neurological Problems
    • Sleep Problems

A UK/European Centre of Excellence for ME

Invest in ME Research (IiMER) has worked since 2011 to create a UK Centre of Excellence for ME at Norwich Research Park, utilising world-class facilities from institutes, a leading university and university hospital – transforming the concept into a real foundation for the future that now requires funding to become fully operational.

The charity's research projects and collaborations have laid strong foundations, creating momentum as a strategic European focal point for coordinated research, clinical care and information.

The Centre would deliver early diagnosis using up to date guidelines, clinical lead oversight, specialist assessments, care packages with family support, home/tele-medical services for severe cases, clinical trials access, GP training, cost savings on referrals, and life-changing benefits for thousands of patients and families.

YEMERG* Early-career workshops - Building the Future

In 2018 Invest in ME Research introduced the “Thinking the Future” workshops to support young and early-career researchers interested in biomedical research into ME. These meetings provide mentoring, networking and collaboration opportunities alongside the main colloquiums and conferences, helping to secure the next generation of ME researchers.

The initiative has since developed into Young EMERG, the early-career arm of the European ME Research Group, further embedding early-career scientists within a strong international research community.

Current Research Projects

The Invest in ME Research international conferences are CPD-accredited events presenting the latest biomedical and clinical research on ME from leading experts around the world. Held annually since 2006 (with interruptions only during the Covid pandemic), they offer a focal point for researchers, clinicians, patient organisations, patients, carers and the public to share knowledge and develop new collaborations.

Each conference builds the global evidence base on ME and helps sustain a growing international research network.

BRMEC* Biomedical research colloquiums

The Biomedical Research into ME Colloquiums (BRMEC) are closed international research meetings established in 2011 to bring together ME researchers from around the world for in-depth, round -table discussion. These CPD-accredited meetings have expanded from exchanging ideas to sharing data, coordinating future studies and building structured international partnerships, including the creation of the European ME Research Group (EMERG) in 2015.

The colloquiums have become a key engine for new multinational projects, helping to shape a coherent long-term strategy for high-quality biomedical research into ME.

Invest in ME Research is a charity run by volunteers - no salaries, no status quo-centric attitudes, and income and effort directed entirely to funding and facilitating biomedical research into myalgic encephalomyelitis.
